More Than Gratitude at Thanksgiving by Tammy McCord

Yesterday we discussed the importance of gratitude and how it can affect your body & life in positive ways. We often encourage our clients (or do this ourselves) to keep a gratitude journal. Sometimes we get stuck on listing things that are "obvious" such as family, friends, job, etc. For the rest of the week, each of us are going to share things we may not think to list under gratitude.

Freedom to Pray

I was on a mission trip where only 3% of the country is Christian. We were on a Prayer Walk and when we entered a non-Christian area we were told to keep our eyes open as we prayed. The goal was to look as though we were having a casual conversation with each other and not draw too much unsafe attention to ourselves. I'm extremely grateful I live in a country where I have the freedom to pray publically, with whomever I wish, & without threat of violence.

Access to Healthcare

In some 3rd world countries a health clinic or the nearest doctor might be one (1) day's walk or drive away. As I write this, I can think of six (6) Emergency Room/Urgent Care facilities within 10 minutes of my house. This doesn't even count doctors offices or clinics at the various Walgreen or CVS locations that are in abundance as well! While I never welcome illness or injury, I am very grateful that help is very quickly found literally around the corner.

Driving Privileges

11 years ago I lost my driving ability due to a medical condition. For 6 months I had to depend on family, friends and taxi's to get everywhere. I don't live in an area that has a large public transportation system. Up until that point, I had taken for granted the fact I could hop in my car any time I wished and go anywhere I needed to go. There is a factor of independence that is present when you're able to drive.....and that freedom is limited when your ability to drive is taken away. I am forever grateful I have the ability to drive and have a deep empathy for those who cannot. I am also grateful I'm blessed to have a car.

Please keep checking back in daily to see how we can expand our gratitude. Thank you for reading!
