“When you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you”
-Mary Stevenson from “Footprints in the Sand”
I walk by this quote in my hallway at home daily. It’s incredible how some days I read it and it just fits how I feel.
This quote reminds me of times when my life was really, really hard. I think about people I have lost in my life and how hard I have grieved. I think about a time when I had a past job that was so stressful that I wanted to quit almost every day. I think about loved ones who have suffered through illnesses, and how helpless I felt. I think about times when my husband and I were in a rut with our marriage. I think about friends who have betrayed my trust, and the pain it caused.
During these difficult times, my faith was typically the only thing that kept me hanging on. The pain at times felt so strong that it was crippling. I would go through the motions on the outside, but inside I was taking it hour by hour, sometimes minute by minute. Hurt, pain, anguish-we all experience them at times. These emotions can make you feel very isolated and alone.
This quote reminds me that through it all, I’m not alone. Even when I don’t think I can take another step, I have someone who is willing to carry me. When life becomes too overwhelming, stressful, and painful, we have a God who knows exactly how we feel. He is willing to take on our burdens as His own in order to help us continue to move forward, when all we want to do it give up. He never abandons us.
Can you think of times in your life when there was only one set of footprints in the sand?
