As we have discussed this week, counseling is definitely a constantly changing field. We all actually enjoy learning new techniques, hearing new ideas, and learning new theories. It keeps things new and relevant for our clients. It has changed a lot since we all started over 15 years ago.
Virtual Therapy is a new way of doing therapy. The therapist and the client are in separate places and therapy is done over their computer. This is very convenient for a lot of clients. Many clients can't come to therapy during their work day or in the evening due to busy schedules with their children. A lunchtime appointment via virtual therapy is perfect. Maybe someone struggles with anxiety and leaving their home. This is a great way to receive therapy for this problem and work their way into the therapist's office. Sometimes a therapist relocates. If they remain licensed in the state they are leaving, they are able to continue seeing clients virtually. It really offers a lot of convenient and practical ways for clients with multiple challenges to still get therapy.
There are a few things clients need to be aware of before starting virtual therapy. One, in most states, therapists need to be licensed in the state their CLIENT is in. A lot of people get that confused. The therapist can do virtual therapy in multiple states, as long as they are licensed in the ones that require it.
Additionally, you want to make sure the therapist has the appropriate software to keep everything confidential. If they are doing therapy over Facetime or Skype, this does not mean it's confidential. It needs to be on a site that is special to therapists and is HIPPA compliant. If the therapist isn't sure what you're talking about when you ask them about this, they probably aren't compliant.
Virtual Therapy is definitely not for everyone, but is a great option for many people. We actually know a great virtual therapist licensed in Indiana and Florida. Teri Claassen can be reached at renewedhorizon.com
