So far this week we've been having a great discussion about the stages of porn addiction. We first learned an addict gets introduced to porn (whether from a friend, family member or stumbling upon it individually) and secondly, the addiction begins to set in. Getting online or looking at magazines begins to become more and more regular.
The third stage of pornography addiction is the Escalation phase. It's during this phase that the frequency of looking at porn increases AND the type of porn being watched changes.
The addict begins to increase the amount of time watching pornography to create the same type of arousal. Whereas in the beginning stages of the addiction, watching 15 minutes of one type of porn produced a high, as escalation occurs, the addict finds themselves needing to watch 2 hours of more degrading/dehumanizing/violent porn in order to achieve that same high. The very same high that 15 minutes of porn once created.
In the beginning an addict might have started by watching porn 1-2 times a month, then increased to 1-2 times a week, and sees that the frequency keeps increasing now to 1-2 times a day or 1-2 times per hour.
In addition to the increase in watching porn, the addict will also notice the type of porn they watch has changed. The deeper they fall into the addiction, the more "shocking" the porn must be for them to watch. The addict realizes in these middle and deeper stages of the addiction they're watching porn they would have described in the beginning as "repulsive" or "disgusting". However now, it's the type of porn that brings pleasure.
If this blog describes you or your loved one, we strongly encourage you to give us a call or another mental health professional. Freedom from pornography addiction is possible.
