This week at Imagine Hope, we are discussing the 5 stages of pornography addiction. Pornography addiction is defined as compulsive sexual activity with the simultaneous use of porn, resulting in mental, physical, emotional, relational, monetary, and other life-functioning issues. Pornography addiction can lead to isolation, depression, job loss, financial issues, infidelity, and relationship issues.
Most of the individuals who become addicted to porn are exposed at a young age. According to the National Institute of Health, the average age of exposure to porn is 11 years old. The most common forms of exposure are from a parent/family member, watching porn at a friend’s home, or seeking it out on the internet. 93% of boys and 62% of girls will be exposed to porn before they turn 18 years old.
Children who are willingly exposed to porn are often curious teenagers. When they seek out porn, they are exposed to unemotional and non-contact sex. What they view is frequently more than the “average” sexual experience. They see objectification of women, violence, group sex, fantasies, and roleplay.
Recently, pornography exposure has become so severe among some teens that there has been a spike in the number of teens being treated for Erectile Dysfunction (ED) due to prolonged and advanced porn use. Those who are exposed early to porn may also struggle in maintaining intimacy in romantic relationships.
