This week, we are discussing the acronym HALT- Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired. As you've read, all of these can be triggers to both addictions, as well as a host of other struggles in life, such as depression, anxiety, and physical illness. Though they are all important, becoming too fatigued or tired can wreck havoc on our bodies and minds! Most of us have been around a child who is over-tired... They are crabby, reactive, and insatiable-- nothing can make them settle down, because their body is deprived of sleep! Adults aren't that unlike kids, in that they need a certain amount of sleep to help them function properly in all areas of life. Not getting enough sleep and being overly tired can cause us to reach for things that are unhealthy and don't really satisfy our need for rest: food, alcohol, drugs, or other things-- because our brains can't function correctly to allow us to realize our true needs. Not to mention the impact a lack of sleep has on our bodies. After an extended period of time without adequate sleep, our bodies immune system begins to decline and physical/emotional issues arise. As a result of all of these thing, our relationships with others can be dramatically impacted. The correct amounts of sleep are so important to all areas of our functioning!
