This week we are sharing with you a book that we would recommend and why. Here’s my pick: Uncommon Marriage: Learning About Lasting Love and Overcoming Life’s Obstacles Together by Tony and Lauren Dungy
Many times in couples counseling I get asked to recommend books-it always seems that people are looking for books about a good, solid marriage example. I would definitely say this book is it!
As a huge Colts fan, I loved Tony Dungy when he was our coach. I loved everything he stood for. He was patient, grace under pressure, and seemed to balance it all. His family and marriage were his number one priority. He was never shy about his faith and his morals.
This book gives the back story. The moves, the job losses, the struggles in their marriage. It is a timeline of their lives together from their first date to present-day. It’s not perfect, but no marriage is. Tony and Lauren openly discuss times when they were less connected, including when Tony made a decision to move the family to Minnesota for a new job without communicating his plans to Lauren. They were not always on the same page!
The book also discusses the suicide of their son, Jamie. What would normally tear families and marriages apart actually drew Tony and Lauren closer together. It’s amazing to read how their faith and their support of one another kept their marriage solid.
At the end of the book, Tony and Lauren identify 8 Core Principles of an Uncommon Marriage, including Faith, Teamwork, Communication, Conflict, Support, etc. I like that they point you to pages in the book that show examples of when they implemented these Principles into their own marriage.
This book is a great read for anyone-from Colts fans, to couples, individuals, and even spiritual leaders.
