What Drives Your Life? Materialism This week we have been discussing things that hold us back by "driving" our life. Rick Warren, the author of The Purpose Driven Life wrote about the dangers of letting feelings, things, or hang-ups be in the driver's seat of your life. Today we are focusing on materialism.
We live in a high consuming society in America. We like to get and acquire, hoping it will fill our voids and make us feel satisfied. We crave security thru our valuables, our money, and what we "own".
When this becomes our goal in life, it drives us. Our focus becomes looking for happiness in possessions and wealth. Now let's be honest, we do feel happiness when we get a new house or a new car. Some people even feel happy when they get new shoes (ME!). But our happiness slowly fades as we move on to the next thing that we pursue for a taste of it. Or in an instant, our things we have worked so hard to acquire can be taken from us, leaving us with nothing.
Real security can truly only be found in God. This can never be taken from you...ever.
It is not wrong to want nice things and even to work hard to obtain them. But when it becomes your driving force in life, you are driving towards a dead end.
Tomorrow Joleen will be sharing our last issue that drives us.
Thank you for reading and have a wonderful week!
