School's Coming- Find an Activity

In keeping with our P.A.C.E. (Staying Positive, Activity, Connecting with Others & Educating) theme this week, today we're focusing on Activity. What does activity have to do with getting organized with school coming? Children like structure and like to know what is happening next in their world. Structure makes a child feel safe. Having planned family or one-on-one activities to do after school/in the evening with your children creates nice routines for them, and fun family time that everyone gets to enjoy. So, enroll your kids into extra-curricular activities, sports, or sign them up at the Y for a group there. Or, maybe you want to have family game night, or play tag or hide-and-go-seek in the back yard. Whatever your preference, get active!

According to the American Heart Association, 60 minutes of physical activity a day for children resulted in:

  • Improved blood pressure,
  • Improved bone strength
  • Improved cholesterol
  • More stable weight
  • Lowered the risk of diabetes & cancer
  • Improved self-esteem

These are such great benefits!

We're not asking you to over-commit your schedules, but plan for some activity throughout the week. How will this benefit you as a parent? It will help de-stress you as well. You'll be spending time with your child, but in a different way. Playing tag or going on a bike ride gets you moving as well, & is quality time with your family that is entertaining & allows for conversation so you can get to know your children in a different way. It's amazing what can "free flow" from a child's mouth when their mind is on an activity but engaging in conversation! Having an activity already pre-planned will feel stress relieving for you as the parent.

We hope you can come up with creative ways to get your children involved in activity. Each child is different & will need different activities. Please keep reading as we will go over our next 2 ways of how to prepare for back to school! Thanks for reading!
